Q  I’m constantly on the road. How can I protect the data on my laptop?

A  Whether at home or traveling, it’s important to observe proper checks and balances to avoid data loss. Here are a few tips:

Back it up. Back up the data on your laptop automatically. Whether you use a USB drive, CD or DVD, remember to test the backup before you leave for the airport. Store backups in a separate, secure location. Don’t forget to keep earlier editions of your software applications on file in case you need to access archived files.

Safeguard your software. Don’t install any new programs before departing on a business trip. You don’t want the new software playing tricks with your computer’s operating system or any applications that you had installed already. Update antivirus software frequently and use it to scan and screen all incoming data.

Handle with care. Invest in a sturdy laptop bag that provides good support and padding.

Stay powered up. Pack an extra battery or two and make sure they are fully charged before you go. If your laptop is plugged in, play it safe — use a power surge protector. For international travel, call ahead to see if your hotel supplies a voltage converter or plug adaptor, or visit your local electronics shop. And if you plan on connecting to a corporate network to read e-mail, check whether your phone cable is compatible with foreign telecom outlets/connections.

Listen before it’s too late. Turn off your computer if it makes an unusual noise.
