Tax accountant hits jackpot

Nick Hulst has to be the envy of every sole practitioner this tax season. The Toronto-based CA won $5.78 million — tax free — late last year in the biggest slot-machine  jackpot in Canadian history.

After 20 attempts on the $3-a-spin Megabucks slot machine at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, Hulst won $5,781,854.41, breaking the previous record of $5.6 million won at Casino Niagara in 2002.

The Megabucks machines, which are located at nine Ontario casinos, rack up a joint jackpot that starts at $1 million and snowballs until one lucky winner gets the grand prize.

But if you assume a multimillion-dollar windfall would be the cue for a tax accountant to abandon his work — especially with the busy season looming — think again. When we contacted Hulst he didn’t want to comment on his career future and said only, “I’m working right now.”
