Join your CA colleagues and peers for a fun-filled afternoon, all for a great cause. Be among the hundreds of CAs who participate each year in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Bike Ride Accounting Challenge.
Like teams from other sectors, the teams in the Accounting Challenge consist of five riders. On event day each member alternates riding a stationary bike for a total of eight minutes over the course of 40 minutes. Last year, the Accounting Challenge raised more than $300,000 with 800-plus riders participating at various locations around Canada.
“I know that accountants are incredibly generous in giving both time and money. As a result, our participation in this event has grown every year.... It’s an enjoyable team event.... for an excellent cause,” says Ricky Pinto, associate partner, Deloitte and 2010 co-chair, Toronto Accounting Challenge.
The ride raises funds to help find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a complex disease that affects the lives of more than 300,000 Canadians.
There are 17 ride locations across Canada with rides on different dates, with a goal to raise $6.5 million nationally. Here are just a few of the locations:
Calgary | September 17, 2010
Vancouver | September 24, 2010
Toronto | October 1, 2010
Montreal | September 24, 2010 |

Note that the accounting teams race at the same time slot in each location. In Toronto, the slot is at 2 pm. The other locations have not yet confirmed time slots.
This year organizers are targeting $2.75 million for the Toronto Ride, with the help of more than 1,500 corporate teams, primarily from the accounting and legal firms, financial institutions, real estate, hotel and restaurant industries.
