University Matters: Prepare for the
Challenges and Realize Your Potential
By Sharron and Michael McIntyre
Creative Bound International Inc., $29.99
This easy-to-read and convivial book essentially provides a how-to guide to high school students
contemplating university. Students who are planning to leave home for university will benefit the most from
the book. There are four sections. In “Getting ready,” tips and insights are provided on issues such as
lodging choice, setting up banking arrangements, course selection and registration. The “Staying organized”
section emphasizes the need for students to manage their time - they have more freedom than in high school,
but at the same time there are lots of opportunities to spend time on projects, student organizations, etc.
The “Academic skills” section reviews best practices for doing projects and assignments, group work and
dealing with professors. Also, it is emphasized that students need to find the learning approach that works
for them. Finally, the “Life skills” highlights aspects of student life -- friendships, health and nutrition,
accommodations and finances -- that could compromise academic success if not well managed. An appendix
contains some tips and checklists. The book includes many quotes from students as well as bits of information
and useful websites.
