Q  I’ve noticed several of my colleagues have life/work coaches. Why would they hire them and what does the process entail?

A  Coaching is definitely gaining popularity for individuals who want to make personal and professional improvements. Here’s some insight into the benefits and how it works:

Why coaches are hired. A coach can boost confidence at work, help change behaviours blocking success, assist in dealing with interpersonal conflict, help balance work and life, support the pursuit of a long-held dream and get clients unstuck from unsatisfying aspects of career or life.

What coaches do. We help define new goals, understand obstacles in the way of progress, motivate clients to do things differently to remove those obstacles and provide support during the process.

What to expect. Coaches cut to the chase. We ask targeted questions and then let our clients talk. We don’t judge, interrupt, shoot them down or tell them to be realistic. They develop action plans and come to conclusions through their responses. I find usually within the first meeting, clients feel a sense of relief and trust. People often see results after their first hour.

Length of sessions. Three months with three 30-minute to 60-minute phone or personal meetings a month will get the best results.
