Ask an expert

Q  I would like a website for my business. Where do I start?

A  Getting online starts with deciding on what you want on your site. Just follow these steps:

Outline content. Make a list of services you wish to present, such as tax preparation, estate planning, bookkeeping. Will there be a newsletter, active reporting or industry news? The greater the service, the more time and money will be spent.

Get in touch. Contact an Internet e-business consultant or a Web design firm to initiate the design phase. Contact information can usually be found at the foot of professionally designed websites.Consult with a designer. The designer will ask you questions about presentation (Flash animation, sound, multimedia) and functionality (ease of updating content, adding a weblog, forums). Point out CA sites you like.

Get a host. Next, your designer will help you find a hosting company that can fulfill your needs.

Present information. Now, you need todeliver the information you want online: corporate history, employee biographies, contacts, industry links, press releases and media clippings plus your corporate colours, logos and imagery. From there, it’s a matter of time. View and review prototype designs, implement the necessary changes and launch your website for all the world to see.
