Q  What’s the most effective way to deal with job stress?

A  If you work under prolonged stress, you may suffer from adrenal fatigue, a condition in which the adrenal glands function at a suboptimal level. Symptoms include low energy, insomnia, reduced memory and weight changes. Here’s help to improve your health.

Diet. Combine unrefined, whole grains and proteins from poultry, fish or beans with essential fats: olive oil, nuts or seeds in meals and snacks. Together, these provide a steady source of energy and put less strain on every organ. Eat raw or lightly steamed vegetables with meals. Avoid processed food, as its sugar, salt and additives put more stress on the liver and adrenal glands. Salt, however, can be helpful to adrenal fatigue sufferers who have low blood pressure. Coffee, colas, alcohol, black tea and chocolate increase the effects of stress.

Supplements. B-complex, vitamin C,co-enzyme Q10, calcium and magnesium assist adrenal function. Ginger root helps regulate adrenal hormones, normalize blood pressure and heart rate and aids digestion. Daily supplement requirements need to be regulated to individual needs.

Mind. Reactions to stress are fuelled by negative thinking — list activities that raise your spirits and do one every day.

Before embarking on any program or supplementation, see your doctor or natural health practitioner.
