Q  How can I improve my effectiveness when using my BlackBerry?

A  Once you’ve mastered the basics of using a BlackBerry, or any PDA device, take your skills to the next level — that’s where the productivity benefitsare attained. Here are four thumb-friendly tips:

When scrolling: Hold down the alt key while rolling the trackwheel to scroll horizontally in any field where you can enter or view text. Hold down the shift key while rolling the trackwheel to select multiple items in a list.

When inputting text: Press the space bar twice to insert a period and capitalize the next letter. Press the space bar to insert @ and periods in an e-mail field. Press and hold a letter key and roll the trackwheel to scroll through international characters, equation symbols and other marks.

When accessing the calendar: Press T to go to “today” in the calendarscreen. Press G to go to a specific date in the calendar screen. Press C to create a new message, task or appointment in the messages, saved messages, calendar and tasks functions.

When reviewing messages: Press enter to page down in an open message and press alt+enter to page up. Press alt+o to view only sent messages in the messages screen. Press alt+i to view only received messages in themessages screen.
