Going concern

Donald Clow, FCA, President & Coo, Southwest Properties

Company profile:
In business for more than 50 years, Southwest is a leading developer, owner and manager of residential and commercial property in the Halifax area. Donald Clow, president since 1998, joined the privately held company as director of finance in 1989. Since that time, Southwest — which now has 85 staff — quadrupled its revenue to $25 million in fiscal 2002.

Hot factor:
Increased demand for homes in Halifax is pushing prices way up, leading empty nesters and others to alternatives such as apartments in Southwest's high-end communities. For example, residents at the Bishop's Landing waterfront development enjoy the project's 40,000 square feet of innovative retail and commercial space, as well as public amenities such as the boardwalk. Indeed, the development's unique blend of public and private interests earned Southwest the Best Mixed-Use Award from the Waterfront Center in Washington, DC. Sunnyside Mall in Bedford, NS, also earned the company kudos; it's the only two-time winner of the Maple Leaf Award for best renovation and expansion of a shopping centre in Canada.

Cool projects:
Salter Block, a neighbouring property to Bishop's Landing, is out to tender, and the company is trying to secure development rights for other mixed-use and residential projects. "We're looking for disciplined growth in core strategic areas," says Clow.

In his own words:
"We create great value by delivering excellent buildings in the best areas. We've had a vision of turning around down-and-out properties by changing their profile and making them successful. Our people are willing to take entrepreneurial risks and have the courage to stick to our vision and get others to believe in it."
